Coach Dan's Sunday Spotlight 2.21.2021

Good Morning!

As a new tradition, every week I want us to start out with a quote that will be placed in my spotlight and then on the board at the gym. Something we can work on as a gym to make us better people in the gym and outside the gym.

Quote of the week
"One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say." - Bryant H. McGill

Our Team
When I started doing CrossFit it was just me and four of my buddies. We had a globo type gym setup in the middle of the Middle East desert with some random barbells, weights and random equipment we used to make it all work. We had no coach. We had little direction. It was just us with a workout provided to use through crossfit.com. While I wouldn't have wanted my CrossFit journey to start any other way... I wish I had what we have now.

Over the past 9 years of being part of the Utah fitness community we have learned a lot as a gym. Not only that, we have been able to build a team that will rival any other team in the state. Our CrossFit team, our High team, our Burn team, and our Olympic Lifting program provides diverse and knowledgeable coaches. These coaches know what they are doing.

When we opened CrossFit The Point I essentially coached every single class we offered. Once Coach Krishelle came on board a few months after opening, we began to build our team. Coach Dave got certified next about a year after being open and our team grew from there. While I loved coaching all the classes early on and gained a ton of experience, my knowledge and abilities were limited. As our team grew, our abilities as a team and our knowledge grew exponentially. Fast forward to today where we have a robust CrossFit team with experience and knowledge up the wazoo. We have a variety of High Fitness coaches who are constantly learning new choreography and throwing epic parties. We have an Olympic Lifting program that rivals any in the state. We have a burn team that has training in a multitude of diverse programs. And a rolling coach who has certification upon certification in different yoga programs. I can confidently say that we are spoiled.

Respect
The reason I chose the quote above is because I believe that sometimes we can take for granted what we have. I believe we do this in many aspects of our life. Our team at Point Fitness truly care about giving you the best training and experience possible but we have to do our part as athletes.

Nothing pleases me more than to see the friendships that are cultivated at the gym. It's seriously one of my favorite things to see. I love that you all get so excited to see each other each day. I love that you all poke fun at each other and crack jokes at my expense. ;). It's truly like going home and being comfortable around family. But just like all things, there's a time and place for everything and I hope that we can do a little better going forward to give our coaches the respect they deserve when running a class.

I wanted to put out a couple of points that I believe you can do in order to get the most out of your experience each day:

  1. Do your best to be on time and participate fully in the warmup.
Nobody likes being late and sometimes it is unavoidable but let's make an extra effort to leave just 5 minutes earlier this week and see how that affects our time at the gym. If you are late, jump right into the warmup. Come ready to workout. To help with this, I will be providing warmups that will be done as a class that will begin right at the beginning of class.
  2. When the coach is coaching, listen.
No matter how long you have been doing CrossFit, it is important to listen to the coach. One example happened just this past Friday for me. Coach Jamie was going over the workout 17.1. This not only has movements that I have done thousands of times but it is also a workout I have completed numerous times. But I took my own advice and I listened to Coach Jamie and guess what? I PRed. Why? Because she suggested one simple thing, "don't set the dumbbell down to rest, rest with the dumbbell above your head" and boom, that's all it took and I set a new personal record on this benchmark workout. Had I been busy talking to my buddies in the corner or off doing my own thing, I would have missed it and most likely would have failed to PR. You may know the movements but others in your class may be new and need to hear the instruction. Please be courteous.
  3. Send me an email or a message about subjects or movements that you wish to have explained by our experts.
  4. If you stay after to get some extra work in, please don't disturb the ongoing class.
This includes simple things like, riding the bike or rowing while that coach is explaining the workout or coaching. It may seem like a small thing but it is so hard to coach with that going on in the background. Just be courteous and be aware of your surroundings. The gym is like an echo chamber. If you have ever tried to talk over someone going full beast mode on a bike, you will understand.

So let's try just a little bit harder this next week to show more respect for our coaching team and our fellow athletes. Our goal at the gym is to make your hour at the gym not only the best hour of your day but also to help make you fitter human beings for having come in.

Announcements

CrossFit Open 2021
We are only a few weeks away from the start of the 2021 CrossFit Open! Get registered at games.crossfit.com. This year we will be doing it a bit different. Instead of our own intramural style, we will be doing it through CrossFit. I am researching to see if there is a way to do an intramural competition directly through their site or not so standby on that.
On top of that we will be teaming up with Mrs. Bluffdale, Mandy Turner, and offering shirts. Instead of the money for the shirts going to the gym we will be contributing to a charity that helps provide Suicide Prevention Awareness.

Spartacus 2021
Our registration for Spartacus, an individual CrossFit competition, is up and running. There will be Rx, Scaled, Teen, and Rx Master's divisions. If you want to participate or would like to volunteer, go here and join us! It is on April 30th and May 1st.

I just want to say thank you for being a part of this gym. It means so much to see you all conquer your fears, set new records and build relationships. Ultimately that's what life is all about.
