Coach Dan's Sunday Spotlight 2.28.2021

Good morning! Happy last day of February!

The month of March is going to be awesome for all of us! You want to know why? Because we say so! Also, the CrossFit Open is back! Like Christmas for CrossFitters! I'll explain why below!

Point Fitness Quote of the Week:
"“Winning doesn’t always mean being first. Winning means you’re doing better than you’ve ever done before.” —Bonnie Blair

I thought this quote above was appropriate as we approach this year's open. Winning happens after all the work is done. The focus when you come into the gym shouldn't be about "winning" rather it should be about improvement.

Improvement is the goal
It took me many years to realize this. Winning doesn't always mean you are on top of the podium at the end of the day. It doesn't always mean that you are number one on the SugarWOD leaderboard at the end of the day. Winning happens while many of us don't even realize it. Sometimes winning is coming in on a double under day like this past week, realizing that 36 double unders every 2 minutes wasn't going to happen, modifying down to 10 double unders every minute and for the first time in your life completing 100 double unders in a workout. THAT'S A WIN! Sometimes it means, taking a barbell strength portion, stripping the weights down and learning for the first time what it feels like to get triple extension on a clean rather than just trying to lift for a PR. THAT'S A WIN!
I will be the first to admit that my favorite thing to watch is when you set new personal records but the process you took to get there gets me just as excited. The grind day in and day out is what it's all about. When you are consistently pushing to improve, you will be a winner every time.

CrossFit Open 2021
I LOVE THE CROSSFIT OPEN!
It has to be my favorite time of year in the gym. Every year, we host the CrossFit open at CrossFit The Point. This will be year 8 that we have done it and every year it doesn't disappoint. Every Thursday evening we watch the WOD announcement to see what the test is going to be. Once it is announced, we start to strategize... The next day, the WOD is programmed as the Workout of the Day and as a gym we complete the challenge that CrossFit headquarters, Dave Castro, as designed for us. For many of us, we show up on Friday night and throw down together with our friends cheering us on and pictures being taken of our victories and failures.
Whether it's your first open or your tenth. Jump on games.crossfit.com and sign up. You will be able to complete one of the options put out each week, no matter your level of fitness. This competition is open to all so join us this year and let's have some fun.

CrossFit Open Friday Night Lights
Every Friday night, starting March 12th, we will be having the CrossFit Open Throwdown for all. I have created 3 separate Facebook events so you can receive a reminder to join us.
March 12th CrossFit The Point FNL
March 19th CrossFit The Point FNL
March 26th CrossFit The Point FNL and Fundraiser

Suicide Prevention Awareness Fundraiser
This year we have teamed up with Mrs. Bluffdale, Mandy Turner, to turn this year's open into an opportunity to support a worthy cause. On March 26th, we will be doing our Friday Night Lights event and Fundraiser. You will have a few ways to support this fundraiser with all proceeds going to the Wolf Pact.
The Wolf Pact is a non profit for teen suicide prevention. A beautiful program mentoring inclusion, service, positive coping skills, & family resources. You can check out their Facebook Page here to read up on them and their cause.

There are a couple of ways you can contribute to this cause. The first and easiest way would be to purchase the CrossFit Open/Suicide Prevention Awareness shirt/tank. You can do this through your PushPress app or by clicking on one of these links:

Men's T-shirts
Women's Muscle Tanks

The second way you can contribute is either by offering up your services or products for the silent auction that will take place on March 26th or showing up to the silent auction and bidding on the prizes. Contact myself or Mandy Turner if you have products that you'd like to offer up to help contribute to this cause.

Final Thoughts
I am so humbled to make this year's open about more than just The Open. I am so lucky to have the platform to be able to make a change in our community. Way too many of our friends and family are lost to suicide. Way too many of our young children are lost. This has hit close to home for myself and way too many of us and if we can help support a non-profit that is 100 percent dedicated to helping with this problem then I say we don't hold back.
I hope that, at the very least, you are able to contribute through the purchase of a shirt and if you are able to offer up more, please do. Please let me know if you are able to offer up anything for the silent auction. It could be a weekend trip to a cabin you have access to. It could be something homemade that you are able to make. It could be services that your company or you personally can offer. Any little thing would be a huge boost and will help us contribute more to this worthy organization.

Thanks for being the type of people that I truly look up to. Thank you for making me proud to be part of the Point Fitness family.
